Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Pregnancy Causes Booming Interest In IVF And Gender Selection Process

Kim Kardashian West’s second pregnancy has caused a spike in interest for in vitro fertilization and gender selection procedures. Kim recently announced that she and husband Kanye West are expecting a baby boy, and reports that they deliberately chose the baby’s gender have sparked an influx of calls to The Fertility Institute.
Even though Kardashian’s representatives have denied that the couple chose to implant only male embryos during their IVF procedure, the report has caused a sudden interest in the gender selection process. Kim and Kanye may not have opted to persue the option, but many of their fans have just heard about it and are interested in trying it.
Dr. Jeffrey Steinberg of The Fertility Institue reveals that the technology has been around for about two decades. While speaking to ThinkProgress, the founder of the world-famous fertility clinic said that gender selection is not new; IVF procedures began 35 years ago. Gender selection has been brought into mass consciousness following rumors that the celebrity power couple used the option to complete their brood. The couple already has a 2-year old daughter, and a son would give them the "perfect" family unit.
“People call us up, and they can’t believe it’s available,” said Steinberg. He explained that it is not only possible to choose a baby’s gender but that the institute has started to venture into choosing actual characteristics. This has led to some debate about the ethical implications of creating what are being referred to as “designer babies.” While it is a widely accepted practice to screen for deformities and physical abnormalities, choosing a baby’s traits has led to some divisions in public opinion.
"What harm comes of this?” asked Frances Kissling of the Center for Health, Ethics and Social Policy. She asks questions about the motivations of parents for choosing their baby’s gender. Is it about thinking one gender is better than the other, or is it just a question of balance?
Kim and Kanye have denied choosing their baby’s gender, but Dr. Steinberg believes that the publicity will raise more awareness about the technology. “As more and more word gets out about it, this will really set the world on fire,” he said.

Kim Kardashian 'is undergoing IVF in latest bid to get pregnant

Kim Kardashian has been undergoing IVF as she struggles to conceive a second child, according to a new report.
The reality star has made no secret of her desire to have another baby as soon as possible, and Us Weekly claims she has turned to in vitro fertilization to increase her chances.
‘Kim has been undergoing IVF,’ a source told the publication. ‘It's causing problems with her body.’

Us Weekly alleges that Kim will reveal an implanted embryo did not take during Sunday’s Keeping Up With The Kardashians mid-season finale.
MailOnline has contacted Kim’s representative for comment.
A preview clip for this week’s episode shows Kim lying down on a doctor’s table in tears with her mother Kris Jenner, as they look at an ultrasound together.
Kim said in December that she was considering IVF, as she shared her struggle to conceive naturally.

‘A few years ago I was told I could never get pregnant,’ she told Elle UK for their Confidence Issue. ‘Three different doctors told me the same thing, which is why I wanted to have my eggs frozen.’
Kim added: ‘I was just about to do that when I found out I was pregnant with North. I want a boy and another girl; I want it to start happening straightaway.
‘I loved being part of a huge family – and I want that for North. We'd do IVF if nothing happens, but we both want to keep trying naturally.’
Us Weekly also claims that the 34-year-old and husband Kanye West are exploring the option of surrogacy, something Kim has been candid about on her reality show. The source said: 'They will do surrogacy over adoption.'

After doctors suggested that a surrogate may be the best way for Kim to have another child, her mother Kris Jenner was quick to volunteer eldest daughter Kourtney to take on the role.
‘Kourtney would probably do it,’ Kris offered, but Kim wasn’t so sure about the idea.
She said: ‘To have a surrogate is really scary to me. I don't want one. I wouldn't dare ask anyone to do that for me.'
The pair had the discussion before Kim underwent an operation to remove a piece of her placenta that was left after delivering North in June 2013, in the hope it would help her chances of conceiving naturally.

But the star – who previously admitted she is ‘having sex like 500 times a day’ to try and get pregnant – hasn’t given up hope.
'We're just hoping that it's sooner than later,' she said during an interview with Access Hollywood last week.
She also shared with Matt Lauer on the Today show: 'I would like to hold out a little bit longer, and still try. I still have hope, so I'm just going to keep on trying. Never say never. I mean, we haven't talked about adopting.'
And Kim told E! News earlier this month: 'We are trying. We try every single day. You can't try harder than we try.

'It's getting exhausting. [Kanye] always says, "Trying for baby number two isn't as fun as trying to baby number one."'
She went on to discuss the complications she had when giving birth to their now 23-month-old daughter - the star went into premature labour and was warned by doctors that she was most likely suffering from life-threatening preeclampsia.
Kim added: 'I did go through a lot with the delivery and so we faced a couple challenges. But we're literally trying everything that we can to make it happen, so I'm to the point now where it's not as stressful to me. And maybe that's when they say it happens.'
When asked about the possibility of using a surrogate, she said: 'I think if it came to that point, but we've trying for over a year and I would maybe wait a couple of years until that point happened.'

Surrogacy – The Real Facts To Know About

A four-million dollar industry. A means to building a family. To some it is a noble act, to others it defies morals. Surrogacy is sure a Pandora's box of conflicting ideas. However, every child is a bundle of joy. Not only are children a matter of great pride to families, but it is a sign of hope that a legacy or lineage will continue in the days that lie ahead.

While one could consider adoption as a means towards building a family, the question of the child being genetically 'yours' could compel people to opt for surrogacy. Then again it leaves a question on the table — how wise could this be? Many celebrities have resorted to the alternative, citing various reasons. The birth of their children has triggered intense debates across the nation, however, the debaters fail to look into a larger perspective.

The concept of 'wombs for rent' has been a rather jaded topic for debates. Ancient religious texts of India quote several instances where the birth of a child remains a mystery. For example, Drona Achargya, the son of Sage Bharadwaj and the Guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas, was said to have sprung out of Bharadwaj. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, was born upon the completion of a yajna. Could these be instances of surrogacy?

So what is surrogacy?

According to the Artificial Reproductive Technique (ART) guidelines, Surrogacy is defined as an arrangement in which a woman agrees to a pregnancy, achieved through assisted reproductive technology, in which neither of the gametes (ovum or sperm) belong to her or her husband, with the intention of carrying it to term and handing over the child to the person or persons for whom she is acting as surrogate.

Who could consider opting for Surrogacy?

According the Indian Law, couples could opt for surrogacy only due to either of the below reasons:

a) Female infertility or other medical issues including risky pregnancy

b) Same sex

c) Single parents

The participants in the procedure

A surrogate birth procedure involves four main groups of people namely – Lawyers, Fertility specialists, parent (s) and the surrogate. Some procedures also involve the participation of surrogacy agencies as well.

The role of a lawyer is rather crucial during such procedures. It could be noted that each nation follows a separate set of norms for surrogacy. The Indian Law, however, has undergone several amendments in this regard.

A woman is at her best of health conditions between the ages of 24-30. He also states that women, who are known to have had successful pregnancies, are often considered as ideal surrogates.

Could a surrogate birth be less risky?

It has been stated women who are likely to undergo a risky pregnancy opt to build a family by means of a surrogate. However, the risk factors remain the same. “Every pregnancy is a unique case. There have been cases when a couple could not have child due to certain incompatible aspects between their sperm and ova. But when injected into the body of another person, apart from their own partners, the results proved otherwise,” said Dr .Harish Nair, Head of the Department of Obstretics and Gynaecology at Carithas Hospital, Kottayam

A surrogate mother is subject to all forms of pregnancy risks. This would include hypertension, low blood pressure, etc. This is bound to affect the child so growing in her womb.

The loopholes

Child custody is one of the major loopholes in the procedure. A few nations, which permit the practice of surrogacy, state that the 'woman who carries the child is the legal mother.' However, the laws of some other nations where the practice is permitted states that the child belongs to the biological parents.
